Next Year Research Focus: Education

For AY 22-23 the Critical Genealogies Collaboratory will focus on the theme of education, with a particular focus on a family of issues related to assessment, measurement, standards, and tracking in education, especially with an eye to their (potential and actual) role in inequalities in education today.  If genealogy is "the history of the present," then our starting point in the present will be contemporary educational inequalities, whose histories we will track by way of studies of measurement instruments, tracking protocols, &c..

To survey such a history of the present we will read from:

  • Fall 2022: Foucault's writings on educations and a very limited selection of secondary scholarship on Foucault and education
  • Winter 2023: Contemporary historiography on educational inequality (especially racial inequalities in the U.S. context) and measurement, tracking, etc..
  • Spring 2023: TBD (either reading more historiographical work, or launching investigations of primary source or archival materials)
